14-year-old motorcycle racer Connor Thomson was competing in round seven of the KTM British Junior Cup at Brands Hatch last weekend.
He had to wait until the end of Friday for his 20 minute free practice session on the Brands Hatch GP circuit. He completed 11 laps improving his lap time throughout to finish with a best time of 1:52.482. That placed Thomson in ninth position.
On the Saturday the P&H Motorcycle/CS Tyre services rider Thomson was out mid-morning for the one qualifying session available to the KTM British Junior Cup riders. He immediately bettered his free practice time by over 2.2 seconds to set himself up with seventh spot on the grid.
Thomson from Surrey made a solid start to 10 lap race one on the Saturday afternoon. He was running with Wasley and Lathrope as the three riders were separated by a round a tenth of a second. On the fifth lap he pushed on up into 5th place but lost the place the next lap in an exciting battle between the three riders. With three laps remaining Thomson had dropped back some 1.5 seconds behind Wasley and Lathrope. Not one to give up, he got his head down and closed the gap, but ran out of laps crossing the line in sixth place as the three crossed the line with less than four tenths of a second between them.
Thomson had to wait until the end of the weekend racing programme for his second event. Thomson started fifth on the grid for this 10 lap race but didn’t get the start he wanted and dropped a couple of places to seventh on the first lap. He was then involved in an intense race with Wasley and Bojko and the three changed places during the race on numerous occasions. At the end Thomson had to settle for seventh place at the finish line as these three riders crossed within six tenths of a second of each other.
He now stands eighth in the championship on 132 points, and it is very close. Thomson is now just 8 points from fifth spot. The next round will be at Cadwell Park on the weekend of 27-29 August 2016.
Connor Thomson said, “Unfortunately, I couldn’t repeat the success on the GP circuit that I had here on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit but I’ve picked up some valuable championship points. It’s really tight now so with a good result at Cadwell Park I could move up the table. I must thank P&H Motorcycles, CS Tyre Services, Steelmate, MotivMoto, Dainese, 151s, MustHaveMediaServcies.com and all my other sponsors”
